Share-a-Horse
Do you want to have access to a horse on a regular basis but just don't have the time, the facilities or the skills necessary for this?
The North River Horse and Humanship Centre Share-a-Horse program is for people that would like to have a deeper involvement with horses without the commitment of owning their own horse or the resources to keep one. Lets face it, if you want to learn more about horses, one riding lesson a week will take you several life times to get the required experience. Having access to a horse at your leisure will go a long way to deepening your knowledge, ability and experience.
Benefits:
How it works:
We have ten horses and ponies within the herd that we offer on the Share-a-Horse program.
The horse is one of the North River herd and stays at North River and is taken care of as part of the herd.
On offer is, for a set monthly fee, two 2-day shares in the horse or pony. Each share has 1-day in the weekend included.
The horses is essentially yours to do with as you want on the property (within the bounds of the horsemanship practiced on the property). To ensure that the safety and wellbeing of both the rider and the horse, horsemanship lessons are required until the horsemanship standard is reached. This programm is mainly addressed to adults as we only have a limited amount of ponies available in the herd. We do offer the Share-a- Horse programm to children but due to more requiered supervision on our part it involves a slightly higher cost per month (see below).
Cost:
Adults: 2 day per week share = $100 per month
Children: 2 days per week share = $120 per months
Payable monthly in advance. Price does not include horsemanship/riding lessons.
Interesting News:
20 years ago I did a study on what it costs to ride your horse per hour; this was hacking not competing. The outcome was $12 per hour, if you rode 5 hours per week.
This week I have just found a feature in Horsetalk written in 2007 comparing the cost of running a car to that of a horse.
Its conclusion:
"Once you've got a horse and gear, you should be able to keep him or her on the go for around $3000 a year if it's a riding hack. Once you start competing and journeying around the show traps, the figure will rise dramatically - kind of like the difference between a family saloon and a rally car."

All this makes a Share-a-Horse programme very affordable.
